LMDA talks #3: An (architectural) musing: space and research

This talk aims to stimulate reflection on the perception of architectural research in relation to physical models. What is it we see (analyzing the purpose in models that present future prototypes), and how can we design research and research design as architects? Indeed, we might ask, what is the status of the physical model in architectural education? Ranulph Glanville has written an excellent paper (Glanville, 2009), as there is a direct hint already in the title of this event. In this paper, Glanville says that the central act of design involves the designer holding a conversation with them-self through the medium of paper and pencil in the act of design. The designer alternates between the roles of doer and viewer, a visual equivalent of talking and listening. This leads to the topic of research design and designing research (Glanville, 1999). If we link this to architectural research, we might question the relation between space and research, especially nowadays in the digital age and the reference to physical models.
